tuffet finale

This last group of tuffet photos defies categorization. Actually, with the end of the year craziness, skating trips and competitions, people making their second (and third, and fourth!) tuffets, and everything else, I'm so behind on tuffet posts that I wanted to get them in before the end of the year. These tuffets were finished at nearly all of the shops I teach at, as well as my house! Some of these tuffets feature alternate layouts, and some are made of interesting materials such as ties, minky, and leather!

Before we get on to the photos, I want to thank the shops that have hosted me this year: Bungalow Quilting and Yarn in Ripon, Patches and Petals in Belleville, Quilt-agoius in Mukwonago, Quintessential Quilts in Madison and Reedsburg, and The Electric Needle in Madison. When you shop for quilt fabric, sewing machines, yarn, or notions, please consider one of these shops. They've all been wonderful. If you can't shop at one of these shops, please shop at a local (or small online) shop. Remember they won't be there any more if you don't shop at them!

On to the tuffet photos!

I am so looking forward to the retreat the end of June. I'm trying to decide on colors. Also, eventually want to make one with ties. How many ties would be needed, and how do I prepare the ties.

I'm excited too!

I've had a couple of students do necktie tuffets and they were very different from each other. One used a tie for each strip; the other did double-wide strips. I think you can see the ties better with the wider strips. It really depends on the effect you want, though. The student who did narrow strips did not interface her silk at all, and it worked out just fine. I think this is partially because she did use such narrow strips. There wasn't a whole lot of room for them to shift around. The other student who did the wider strips did interface them. In the end, I would probably go that route, regarding both the interfacing and the width. But that is really a matter of personal preference.

If you wanted to do narrow strips, you would need 64 total strips. You could probably get more than one strip out of a tie, depending on the width. If you go half wide, then you would need 32 strips.

Just to complicate things more, there is no reason you couldn't alternate or mix up the widths of the strips.

I am making my own necktie tough it in the near future. I will be sure to write a blog post about it. There are some other, subtle, issues with working with silk. Of course, if some of your ties are not silk, then that might provide its own special dilemmas!
